The Truth about Design and Marketing for SME Owners.

Dear Small Business Owners,

You can’t do everything on your own.

This may not be an easy thing to accept, especially for an ambitious and capable person like yourself, but that is the truth.

The good news, though, is that you don’t have to do everything, and it would actually be better for your business if you let some of these tasks go!

In our years of experience, we’ve seen SME bosses or company executives try to cut costs and get more involved in certain work processes by taking charge of things that are not necessarily in their domain – namely, marketing and design content. While it is xq you would know the best about your business and that this level of involvement might allow greater control over certain assets, it is not sustainable in the long run.

First of all, it is simply not efficient to be concerned with every technical detail of a marketing campaign or content plan. You have experts for that; let them handle it so you, the expert of your business, can steer the ship and take care of the bigger picture.

Secondly, more control isn’t always better. In-house marketing and design work might make sense for quick and small bits of content here and there, but things like larger projects with a budget to match or a long-term campaign is best left to a dedicated team of creatives to execute without the input of too many people diluting the main idea.

We’ve all seen the works of AI or the non-writers and non-designers who inevitably turn to such tools for help, and we can still tell the difference. The quickly thrown together social media post you composed with the help of ChatGPT or the design graphic your intern made on Canva might have been convincing enough for that one time, but not every time. In fact, it could even start to hurt your brand. You spent a long time building up your company to what it is today, so don’t let that go to waste. Every piece of communication is a branding asset and a customer touchpoint, an opportunity to connect with your audience. You can’t really do that when they are busy laughing at the mismatched fonts or puzzling over the stock images you chose to accompany your message.

Of course, we don’t blame you for wanting to try on your own. From social media management and advertising to design and copywriting, digital marketing might seem to be something everyone can do because everyone is online. People create content and go viral on their own all the time without a whole production team behind them, so why not businesses? Design tools and software are more accessible than ever, some of them free, so why bother to hire a graphic designer when you can train yourself to become one instead?

While there is nothing wrong with learning or experimenting, know that behind every viral post or successful marketing campaign, there is usually a solid strategy behind them, even moments that seem to have happened because of a stroke of great luck. A general rule of thumb is that there is no such thing as an overnight success – the person has likely worked on many different things before finding one that worked. The same goes for hard skills like writing or design – if it were so easy, why isn’t everyone a designer or writer, including yourself? Most creative professionals went to school or trained for years to hone the skills they have today, and they can all tell you the craft is not as simple as playing around on Canva, Gimp or the settings of your iPhone, or typing prompts into DeepSeek and Copy.ai.

That’s another good rule – when everyone sticks to their strengths and focuses on collaboration rather than try to take over each other’s roles, you will produce the best results. Trust us, we’ve seen it. We’ve also seen what happens when there are too many cooks in the kitchen, which you do not want and don’t ever have to deal with again once you learn to trust the process.

We are a team of creatives and branding experts who are proud to have built or transformed the brands we worked with for over 12 years not just with skills and the years of practice and experience behind them, but also all our hearts and minds. More good news. Such help is available – and it is not as expensive as you think. In fact, it might be the most cost-effective strategy you can employ for the sustained success of your company in the long run. If you don’t have a marketing or design department, there are plenty of creative agencies out there that specialise in crafting meaningful and authentic content, complete with exquisite designs and copywriting.
